Tests were performed on seven passenger vehicles run through the ECE urban driving cycle on a DC chassis dynamometer. The vehicles were fueled with gasoline and 10 % alcohol in gasoline blends of methanol, ethanol and 'Motor' alcohol. Motor alcohol is a blend of 70 % ethanol, 21 % C3 alcohols and 9 % higher alcohols. One vehicle converted to run on 100 % methanol was also tested. Driving error was reduced to a minimum by means of a statistical driving cycle analysis. Aldehyde species C1 to C4 were measured using the chromatographic DNPH method. The paper reports the results of these tests in the form of bar charts showing the aldehyde species levels for each fuel tested. These results provide an insight onto the effect of an alcohol species on the aldehydes present in the exhaust. One vehicle was tested using a range (0 % - 14 %) of Motor Alcohol/gasoline blends. The results show the effect of the amount of alcohol in the blend on aldehyde emissions. These results are shown to be of use when optimising a blend in terms of emissions.
