The paper deals with the activity carried out to develop the catalyst, investigate the influence of operative parameters, design the reactor system, optimize the synthesis loop and the separation unit. The main features of the process are presented and discussed. The several steps of the process development, from the bench scale to the industrial plant, are also described. The industrial scale demonstration MAS plant at Pisticci (15000 tons/year capacity) is presented. The results obtained by operating the plant are discussed. A plant for MAS production from natural gas is described and consumption figures are given.
