Conventional manual drilling and fastening of aircraft assemblies are highly labor-intensive and mundane tasks that must be stringently controlled to ensure both product quality and operator safety. These operations also are costly because of their reliance on human judgment to maintain accuracy. New and innovative assembly techniques for such operations as drilling, countersinking, dimpling, fastener insertion and fastener head shaving are needed to reduce these costs, increase productivity and improve the working environment.
