The marine industry is historically one of the oldest commercial users of composites (fibre reinforced polymers), but now perhaps the aircraft industry's poor relation with respect to technological progress. Yet possibly, it is the marine industry that has some of the greatest potential for exploiting the unique properties of composite materials. This paper examines the current state-of-the-art of composites in the marine industry, attempts to analyse the potential for greater use and examines how the industry needs to respond. Emphasis is placed on the replacement of existing metal structures with composites and the role of higher strength and stiffness reinforcement fibres such as KEVLAR 49.
