To the experience of turbocharging rail-traction diesel engines for four decades has been added advanced turbocharger design technology. The resulting potential for higher levels of performance and greater service reliability in turbochargers for the coming generation of rail-traction diesel engines is discussed. The benefits of fitting new-technology turbochargers to in-service engines is also examined.
