Medium-speed diesel engines are the dominant prime movers in diesel locomotives worldwide. This fact is due to the relatively low wear rates and low maintenance costs of this kind of diesel engine. Rail traction in contrast to other applications has particular requirements concerning load pattern, environmental conditions, service-possibilities, ambient conditions, dust-protection, acceleration etc. Consequently a careful adaptation of engines and installation in the locomotive is necessary. Taking the MaK engine M 282 as an example: supercharging and load exchange; injection and combustion; general design of pistons and piston rings; cylinder liners; cylinder heads; valves etc.; cooling system. Air filtration arrangements in the locomotive are, among others, discussed and adaptations to rail traction demands determined.
