Diesel Engines in traction use on BR experience a fluctuating loading pattern not normally seen in other large diesel applications. This makes the engine particularly vulnerable to fatigue failures. To ensure that diesel engines which are purchased in the future are better suited to railway environments, British Rail have developed an acceptance testing procedure based on consideration of metal fatigue. The control and execution of the test are the responsibility of the engine manufacturer. The type test is also used to provide a declaration of performance parameters, fuel consumption, noise, and oil carry over. Experience of testing to a fatigue regime has vindicated British Rails user requirement. Several engine types have been tested to date, the defects revealed ranging in severity from 'nuisance' through 'expensive' to 'potentially catastrophic'. Quality defects have also been revealed.
