Until the seventies heat exchangers for automotive engines were predominantly made of copper and brass. The introduction of aluminium radiators in the automobile industry represents an exemplary case of a successful product development which was based on the inherent properties of the light metal. It was given decisive support by the market trend towards lighter cars and by the introduction of sophisticated and economically efficient manufacturing and assembly techniques. Aluminium's breakthrough began in Europe in the seventies. Nowadays, in Europe aluminium radiators for passenger cars hold a more than 70 % share of the market; in US cars this share is rapidly growing; and in Japan a start has been made. This paper describes the state of the art with special attention to the advanced brazing techniques. In this field, fluxless brazing plays an important role.
