A combination of an advanced, highly controllable engine and an electronically controlled belt type CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) formed the basis of a powertrain system for the Ford ELTEC (ELectronic TEChnology) vehicle. A powerful automotive microprocessor was used to operate a comprehensive interactive control strategy intended to improve driveability and fuel economy within forthcoming emissions constraints. A number of novel control features, such as comprehensive inlet port controls, ionisation feedback control, throttle control and transmission ratio and line pressure controls have been developed and their individual worth assessed. Particular attention has been paid to the dynamic performance of the system. VA plan for future developments has been evolved to reduce hardware costss and further improve vehicle driveability and economy.
