There are applications in which adhesives replace other methods of fastening with only minimal change in design. Other applications involve situations open only to adhesive manufacture. The first case is shown by substituting adhesive for rivetting. Among examples of the second case are honeycomb panels, composite constructions and stress-contour thickening. Reasons for preferring adhesiveyly bonded joints include reduction in peak stress and better dynamic fatigue characteristics. Examples are taken from civil engineering projects, aircraft manufacture and helicopter blades.
