Research on high-strength steels (HSS) for automobiles in Japan started with trial for ESV project and was promoted by the counterplan for the oil crises, resulting in a great increase of portion of HSS in the white bodies. Recently demands are mainly for super HSS for reinforcing members, hot-rolled HSS for wheels and bake hardenable HSS for panels. This paper presents trends of commercial HSS in Japan now together with their respective strengthening mechanisms and shows examples of automobile parts made of HSS. Also some results of joint research of automakers and steelmakers are reviewed on energy absorptivity in crush, press formability, spot weldability and fatigue strength of HSS, considering the effect of gauge reduction by the application of HSS on car weight.
