In this paper, the effects of engine output torque and driveline nonlinear characteristics on vehicle driveability are investigated. Vehicle vibration which is perceived as insufficient driveability is caused by driveline vibration and the excitation force applied to the driveline is the transient fluctuation of engine output torque. The excitation force is evaluated by frequency domain data of engine output torque. A method for calculating frequency domain data is introduced utilizing response of single degree of freedom system. Also the result proving the effectiveness of this method are presented. The transmission characteristics of nonlinear elements which are contained in the vehicle vibration system is examined. The driveline vibration is reduced by tuning the transmission characteristics of non-linear elements. The adequacy of these studies is confirmed by analysis using a vehicle simulation model. Furthermore, an example of application to improve vehicle driveability is also presented.
