Two techniques are normally used for the assessment of the fatigue strength of the joints between blades and disks in aero-engines: in one the disk, complete with blades is spun at an appropriate velocity, stopping and starting at regular intervals. In another, radial loads are applied to the disk through hydraulic jacks fixed to dummy blades. A procedure for the life assessment of dovetail joints between blades and disks in aero-engines is presented. The basis for assessment is a combined fatigue and fretting parameter that can be calculated by finite element analysis and verified by Moire interferometry. Supporting evidence is also presented for a titanium alloy joint tested at room temperature. The effect of temperature on the fatigue life is discussed by reference to tests conducted at 600 Cel.
