The adoption of new mechanical design features and materials by the automatic transmission builders are leading to more specific and varied automatic transmission fluid (ATF) requirements. This paper describes these requirements, especially with respect to friction, low-temperature fluidity, shear stability, and antiwear. It discusses the position vehicle manufacturers are taking and the important perofrmance criteria of future ATF specifications. Developments are also described that led to the multipurpose 'Universal Fluids' prominent in today's market.
