Existing computerized models of articulated heavy trucks are used to investigate driver/vehicle system performance in braking in a turn and straight-line braking on a roadway with sidewise differences in friction level. Results from simulated maneuvers are employed in examining directional control difficulties that may be experienced during antilock braking of empty and fully laden commercial vehicles operating on poor, wet road surfaces. The findings of these analyses are used in discussing implications of various antilock control strategies (worst-wheel or independent-wheel arrangements, for example) on directional control during braking, vehicle-performance testing, and type-approval calculations.
