Cathodic protection is one method used to control corrosion on buried gas distribution piping. Proper interpretation of the level of cathodic protection requires appropriate correction or compensation be made in the pipe-to-soil potential for errors from IR drop in the soil and from stray AC and/or DC interferences. Nine new approaches were studies for feasibility to determine the true polarized potential on piping with either impressed-current or sacrificial-anode cathodic-protection systems. One new approach for use with impressed-current systems was developed and tested as a laboratory prototype. It gave accurate determinations of true polarized potential on buried steel coupons under various interference-free and AC-interference conditions. Further development is needed to improve accuracy with certain types of pure DC and rectified AC interference. Two new approaches were identified to determine the level of protection with either type of cathodic-protection system. These approaches utilize the characteristics of the response of buried steel to small AC excitations or DC pulses.
