The anticipated operational requirements, preliminary institutional considerations, and projected economics of coal-fueled diesel locomotives are presented. The effects on internal rate of return on investment are shown for a number of variables including coal fuel costs, diesel fuel costs, engine overhaul frequency, and fuel system costs. Favorable internal rates of return can be shown for fuel costs and overhaul periods that are acceptable.
