A tendency towards carrying out the fatigue tests of the load-carrying elements is a characteristic feature of contemporary methods of the fatique researches all over the world. Such tendencies were also a principle of realization of analogous researches of the rail vehicle wheelset axles in Poland. These reserches were aimed to determine the fatigue strength characteristics of the axles in cross-sections showing the notches resulting from the design or from the procedure of manufacturing as weell as to determine the greatest effort of material when the external forces are acting. In the paper the results of the so far carried out researches have been shown, they have been analyzed on the background of the existing state of science, and the applied methods of researches as well as the method and course of realization of the fatigue tests have been described. Some chosen practical aspects of the test results have been analyzed particularly. Moreover there has been stated a difference in localization of the fatigue fractures during the stand tests and during the service life of the axles. This fact is now a base for determining the scope of further researches aimed to get the complex solution of this problem.
