Large numbers of aluminium rivets are used in modern aircraft. Efforts to automate this work go back to the 40s, and today automatic riveting has attained remarkable technological standards. From the process-technological standpoint, clean and burr-free predrilling is an extremely important factor. Automatic riveting machines themselves take variousforms; in the simplest case the components to be riveted are positioned by hand in C-frame presses. With bulky and heavy structural components, NC-controlled positioning equipment can be used. For riveting at right angles to the outer skin, smaller machines mounted on manipulation equipment have been developed. For components accessible from one side only, the recoil-less riveting hammer has been successfully automated.
