Sealing of today's aircraft requires many different sealing materials to resist and control the various fluids being encountered over a very wide temperature spectrum. Sealants are used to contain fuel in fuel tanks, to contain pressurized air for high altitude operations, to contain corrosive fluids, to inhibit corrosion in fastener holes and structural joints, and for many more specialized functions. Sealants used in the mating surfaces of structural joints and for wet-fastener installation are very efficient, light-weight seals. However, they must be closely controlled since they can affect static and fatigue strength of these joints. Wet installation of fasteners affects the installation torque and the torque/tension relationship.
