Mechanical fasteners are highly significant, structurally and economically, in the design and manufacture of aircraft. Quantities are in the millions for large aircraft. Many varieties of fasteners are required for various applications, some for highly critical joints. Weight constraints on overall aircraft structure, fuel tank sealing, aerodynamic flushness, galvanic and stress corrosion prevention, automated installation, and other factors require sophisticated technology in fastener selection. Some of the organization involvement, selection procedures, testing, and concerns involved in optimizing fastener selection for large cargo aircraft are presented.
