In a centersill-less gondola railroad car, the end loads are transferred to the car frame through shear plates at the car ends. A fatigue test program was conducted to study the performance of the critical joint between the shear plates and side sills using scaled down specimens. Finite element analyses were utilized in the design of the specimens and in the interpretation of results. Holes and brackets were introduced in an attempt to decrease the stresses at the critical part of the joint. The 5456-H116 shear plates were joined to the simulated 6061-T6 sills by welding, riveting and rivbonding - a combination of riveting and bonding. Both welded and riveted panels were repaired and retested. The riveted and rivbonded shear plates had lives two and eight times, respectively, those of comparably loaded welded plates. Lives of repaired specimens were 50 percent or more of their initial lives.
