The main function of gear oil additives is to provide therequired level of AW, EP, anticorrosion and durability characteristics in a high rate of energy transfer environment. In S-P gear oil additive systems the type and amount of sulfur and phosphorus compounds as well as ratio of the two elements are critical for satisfactory AW/EP performance. Balancing the activities of the various compounds needed to satisfy the diverse and sometimes competing requirements is a delicate yet necessary part of gear oil formulating. Utilizing synergisms and combining two or more main properties into one additve molecule is an important part of a successful formulation effort. Performance optimization is a key requirement for a technically and commercially successful gear oil additive package. Packaging, which entails selecting both the proper additives and the right process of putting them together for a harmonious, long shelf-life with full activity retention, is a vital part of a completed formulation effort.
