All moving components in a vehicle require suitable lubrication to prevent early damage, trouble-free operation and long service life. However, not all tribological conditions during an operation of a vehicle can be handled adequately by conventional lubricants. Difficult tribological conditions are vibrations, shock load, extreme pressure, slow movements and presence of gasoline; detrimental effects on moving components from these conditions are rapid oxide formation, from fretting corrosion, break-in wear, scoring, seizure, noise, high frictional losses and reduced service life. Modern lubricating coatings have proved to be very effective surface treatments to cope with the listed problematic tribological conditions. Several European can manufacturers apply bonded coatings to surfaces of various moving components such as camshafts, tappets, gears, carburettor parts, pistons, cylinder head screws etc. These surface treatments have proved to handle difficult tribological conditions in a vehicle adequately and prevent early failure of moving components.
