Improvement in fuel savings by the application of advanced technologies in materials and structure is one of the major design objectives for new transport aircraft. The technical and industrial possibilities of introducing a new generation of composite materials and aluminium alloys for current and future aircraft programmes is discussed, considering both the potential benefits and possible timescale of their application. The weight saving potential and some economic effects of these new materials are evaluated for an advanced long range transport aircraft.
