To meet the competition with the highway truck transportation the railroads have to make a competitive transportation system, which has to be cheaper and faster. The integral train system of the New York Air Brake Co. was presented to the Assoc. of American Railroads as a competitive solution. Design goals, based on high automation step, low maintenance and crew requirements, reducing costs up to 50 % of the present cost, are discussed. The composition consists of specially designed locomotives power and control units, roll on/roll off fuel pods, final driven axles subsystems located in the links of platform units. The compositions can be bended together with automatic couplers to iron highway systems, reducing terminal time by the flexibility in loading and unloading. (Jarc)
