This paper describes the application of the modal synthesis technique to develop a structural-acoustic system modal of the automotive vehicle. As an application, finite element models of a representative vehicle structural system and the associated passenger compartment acoustic cavity are considered, and the mathematical method for combining these models via the component mode synthesis technique is described. The structural-acoustic system model provides a means of predicting the interior noise level in the passenger compartment by computer simulation for road, powertrain, or aerodynamic inputs which may occur during actual operation of the vehicle. An experimental measurement from a road test is employed to illustrate the accuracy of the model prediction.
