The UDF is seen as a revolutionary change in engine propulsion. It is expected to replace the turbofan in high speed subsonic military and commercial applications, providing lighter weight and a 25 % improvement in SFC. High propulsive efficiency is achieved with counter-rotating fans, directly driven by a counter-rotating turbine. This natural pusher configuration lends itself to a simple exhaust system and a rear fuselage mounting for the engines. Engine thrust size is not constrained.
