Studies by Lockheed and others have shown that an advanced propeller-driven aircraft is a fuel-efficient alternative to today's commercial turbofan and turbojet-powered airplanes. In these studies Lockheed recommended a test assessment program to evaluate the blade stresses, acoustics, and structural effects of a large (9 ft diameter) propfan that cannot be adequately assessed using current small-scale propfan models. The result was the Propfan Test Assessment (PTA) Program sponsored by the NASA Lewis Research Center. This large-scale propfan assessment required a turboprop drive system so that realistic tests could be conducted under actual flight-conditions. The drive system selected was the Allison Model 501-M78, consisting of a production Allison Model 570 engine and a Model T56 gearbox with modified components. The Model 570 engine has been modified to incorporate the necessary features to permit altitude operation. These features include an XT701 control system and a modification to the turbine to increase flow capacity. The T56 gearbox also was modified to ensure compatibility of the engine power turbine and propfan speed requirements. The Model 501-M78 engine will have the capability of delivering 6000 shp to the propeller during static operation at sea level on a standard temperature day. The design goals of the drive system are to ensure a capability at 35000 ft and 0.8 Mach number with the 9 ft dia propfan. Currently the PTA engine design effort has been completed and hardware is being fabricated. The component testing is scheduled to begin in August 1985, with an engine delivery targeted for January 1986.
