Turbocharging of passenger cars has been strongly developing in the last few years. The number of vehicles fitted with turbo-engines has increased graetly, as witnessed by the production capacity of turbocharger manufacturers which should triple between 1982 and 1985, rising from 650000 units/year to about 2 million units/year. Turbochargers have also been developed in the way of miniaturization. It is now possible to turbocharge engines of less than 500 cc cubic capacity, to obtain a high boost pressure at low speed and short response time with a proper choice of turbine characteristic, but one is limited in that field by the accompagnying drop in performance at high speed. Variable geometry turbochargers which are currently under development at several manufacturers, should give there a decisive advantage in the next years. The electronic boost pressure control enables better use to be made of engine capabilities and adjustment optimization to be achieved in accordance with operating conditions or fuel grades used. This is of growing interest in the event of lead free fuels utilization in Europe. Water injection yields noticeable performance gains, but does not seem to be well suited to mass production at present time.
