A two-place, single engine, 150 hp, fuel injected aircraft was modified to utilize ethanol as a fuel. The basic modification was increasing the injector size. Data was collected on engine operating characteristics both by using an on board electronic data logger and by direct reading of the instrument panel. Power tests were conducted using a Lebow torquemeter and detonation testing was accomplished with a Sperry engine analyzer. The results of over 400 flight hours indicate a decreased cost per mile despite an increased fuel flow. Flight test data also indicates slightly cooler engine operating temperatures on alcohol versus gasoline for certain reasonable powersettings. Power tests demonstrated that engine output increased when alcohol w1s used. A materials compatibility problem resulted from an interaction between alcohol and aluminium in the fuel tanks. This problem was solved by coating the interior of the tanks with an appropriate compound. Flight testing has been conducted at altitudes ranging from -200 to 14.000 feet MSL.
