Development of a prototype intelligent robotic systems and application of the system to riveting of aircraft production assemblies is reported. The system consists of a task-level robotic cell interfaced through a computer network to a high-level company database. Part geometric data for vision and robot control is generated by a CAD system and transmitted over the network to the robotic cell. The cell features a part storage and retrieval system, a vision system, a robot, and an automatic riveting machine. A cell supervisory computer integrates cell devices and coordinates cell activities using a high level programming language.
