A robotic arc-welding system is described which has been developed for remote welding in shipbuilding. Its main area of application is in placing the final down-hand fillet welds inside the closed double bottom units of standard container ships. Vision and simple touch sensing are used to allow the operator to remain outside the bottom unit while guiding the robot along the appropriate seams. Significant improvements in performance over traditional human welding methods have been obtained.
