As the robot arc welding market expands, the benefits of sensor guidance are becoming clear. This paper discusses the justification and the requirement for such a sensor, and outlines the approach taken by Meta Machines in the design of the MetaTorch product for welding thin sheet metal pressings. Recent developments of the hardware and software to extend the range of metal finishes and joint profiles that can be dealt with are also mentioned.
