Hydroacoustic navigation systems based on the super short baseline principle have found their worldwide applications in numerous navigation jobs during the last 6-7 years. The operating principle is based on the use of a single multi-array transducer combined with a transponder or beacon as subsea reference source. This paper describes a further development of the super short baseline principle. A steered narrow beam transducer has been developed for tracking of one or more reference transponders. The tracking transducer gives the system extended accuracy and operating range, still maintaining the simple operation procedure of the existing super short baseline system. To obtain the extended accuracy and operating range, the tracking function is designed with a narrow beam built into the transducer multi-sensor array. Automatic tracking of the transponder is achieved through the combination of electronic beam-steering and mechanical training of the transducer.
