This paper describes the current vehicle service background and maintenance practice and the actions which have been and are being taken to improve service efficiency and extend service intervals. Examples are given of how vehicle components and systems have been designed for minimum maintenance on current vehicles, and how new techniques of fault monitoring and diagnosis are being developed, both for the increasingly complex electronic control systems now being introduced into the vehicle and for the more conventional vehicle conditions of importance such as bulb outage, fluid levels, brake pad wear, service interval, etc. Finally, a forecast is made of future developments in vehicle condition monitoring and fault diagnosis, looking in particular at the use of some of the more sophisticated electronic techniques which are now becoming available, and also at the potential as diagnostic tools of centralised computer systems with data links to individual dealers.
