This paper deals with the results of a systematic hydromechanic analysis of rectangular barges in restricted water depths. The numerical methods used are briefly reviewed and evaluated with respect to their accuracy and efficiency for design purposes. In the examples presented in the paper the relevant parameters, i.e. the ratios length-to-beam, beam-to-draft and water depth-to-draft, have been variied. Exciting forces, hydrodynamic coefficients, shear force, bending and torsional moments are presented. The effect of the restricted water depth on the hydrodynamic characteristics of barges is demonstrated. Furthermore, some conclusions are drawn concerning the applicability of the strip theory and the necessity for a three-dimensional analysis. Some results of calculations of drift forces on barges in restricted water depth are also presented.
