New development trends and efforts in the application of the continously variable transmission (CVT) to make the cars more economically by boosting the fuel economy to 30 % are presented. Optimum operating engine conditions can be adapted by the V-belt CVT in a wide drive ratio up to 1:25 and 100 hp power transmission. Power transfer in the traction, steel-belt and rubber-belt transmission as well as the comparation between the flat-belt and V-belt are presented. Ford and Fiat cars driven by CVT in Europe can be aspected in the end of 1984 and in the USA in the 1986 or 1987. (Jarc)
