The RACER (Rankine Cycle Energy Recovery) system is an unfired waste heat recovery system designed for use aboard Navy gas turbine ships to convert heat from the exhaust of the LM2500 main propulsion gas turbines into useful shaft horsepower. RACER enhances the military characteristics of applicable Navy gas turbine ships, particularly by its substantial fuel saving characteristics. The RACER system has progressed from a technical feasiblity investigation, through a competitive preliminary design phase and is now a major research and developmentprogram. Transition to a specific ship application is becoming more likely as milestones are accomplished. There are several views of any program: the sponsor's, the contractor's, the test facility's and the ultimate user's. This paper summarizes the contractor's view.
