A history of the man-powered flights from the Icarus flight with the wings made from feathers and wax to the modern flying bicycles made from carbon fibres and Kevlar are discussed. Prizes as Peugeot's in the beginning of this century and Kremer's have stimulated the design and construction of lighter and successfuller flying machines to make possible a flight over the English Channel, realised by Bryan Allen in 1979. A survey over the significant attempts at human-powered flights, constructors and pilots, technical parameters in the USA, Japan, Canada and Great Britain is presented. (Jarc)
