This paper presents an approach for the selection of a modern turboprop speed decreasing gearbox (SDG) for a commercial transport powered by twin tractor engines. The horsepower level is 12.500 HP per engine, more than twice that of any production aircraft engine in the Western world. Included is a discussion of how the parameters of a modern propfan lead to significant departures from past practice in SDG parameters. The sensitivity of SDG parameters on direct operating cost and its influence on design is also presented. Seven candidate configurations were screened and two promising ones were further evaluated. Information is given on the two designs and one is identified for further refinement.
