Automotive electronics has firmly established itself as a major force in the competitive marketing area. This paper provides a brief status of product application in the U.S. It then outlines the author's perception of what technological progress must be achieved over the next decade to assure that optimal system application, including function, cost, and reliability are achieved. This includes defining what the automotive and electronic industries must mutually accomplish. Finally, a product evolution forecast for the next decade is given.
