It is shown that the slip-stick phenomenon influencing the tire-surface interaction, should be considered in studying vehicle ride oscillations and hop oscillations in particular. For this purpose a vehicle tire model which includes a rotational spring with characteristics of an axle-wheel-tire system in addition to a radial spring was developed. This model can develop stable oscillations without any external excitation. Computer simulations of the model are discussed. It is believed that accurate vehicle ride simulation models accounting for energy transfer from the engine to the traction surface through the tire should include torsional spring characteristics of the tire.
