This paper describes a simulation of vehicle, engine and catalyst performance and was developed for evaluating alternative engine control strategies. Consequently, primary emphasis has been placed on a simulation which is able to capture important vehicle dynamics without undue complications. Fuel consumption, engine and catalyst output emissions, and temperature dynamics are an essential part of the vehicle simulation. The vehicle simulation has been validated on data from chassis and engine dynamometer tests, and has proven to be a valuable tool for the automotive engine control engineer.
