Under the influence of the changed fuel situation, a new design approach for the medium speed engine has been necessary. Reliability and availability have even an increased importance in the equation of max. operational economy. The paper is focused upon reliability aspects and service experience gained on the Z40 Sulzer engine, as well as on the consequences drawn for its newest development step, the ZA40. The thermodynamic layout in the engine is made not only with a goal of lowest fuel consumption, but also optimum conditions in heavy fuel operation. The service experience and the related design aspects are discussed in connection with the important areas of an engine which determine its qualification to burn heavy fuel. Some important related installation aspects in heavy fuel operation are discussed.
