First, effects of frictions appearing between piston rings and a cylinder wall and gas leakage through piston rings on a Stirling engine output are described. They had been studied with three kinds of test machines, and results were obtained in relation to the measurements to the friction force and amount of the gas leakage applying three kinds of piston rings, and to the effects of the friction and gas leakage on the engine output. Second, the application of ceramics into an experimental Stirling engine is described. Two kinds of ceramics were used for the test. One type is high temperature resistant, high strength ceramics and the other is low thermal expansion ceramics. At the last part, proposal and preliminary study of an internal combustion Stirling engine is reported. It is hoped to have higher thermal efficiency than a conventional internal combustion engine.
