Detailed are the results of a long-term research programme specifically concerned with the application of emulsified fuels to marine diesel engines undertaken by the Department of Marine Engineering at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, and sponsored by the Department of Industry. Extensive laboratory experimental evaluation on medium and slow speed engines was undertaken over the full power spectra with water in fuel emulsions, ratios ranging from zero to 20 % and fuel quality from high distillates to Bunker C. All emulsions used were produced 'on-line' by mechanical means and involved no surfactant additives. Subsequent sea trials were included in the programme involving three vessels operating in their normal capacity as ferry and cargo carriers in order to verify the laboratory data obtained and to determine operational acceptance. All data so obtained is either included in the paper or will be presented at the conference with specific details of the range of fuel economies achieved.
