The conclusions reached from economic studies led the Australian National Line to consider coal burning ships as an alternative to diesel driven tonnage when replacing two bulk carriers employed in the transport of bauxite on the Australian Coast. This paper gives a brief history of the performance in service of the first vessel and compares this performance with the original design objectives.
