Modern merchant ships are being designed for maximum operating efficiency in a very competitive business. Attention of designers has been directed to reducing capital cost, fuel costs and the cost of crewing. The engineering arrangements reflect the effort to reduce costs. Redundancy of machinery must be justified on a cost-benefit basis. Sophisticated items of plant are included to permit the use of low grade fuels. Integrated propulsion systems and automatic controls are used in an effort to reduce engine room staff numbers. Traditionally a design has been considered on the basis of assessement of crucial components. The author in this paper suggests that under the prevalent conditions it is more appropriate to consider systems and a systems reliability approach is proposed.
