It has been discovered that, whenever the crankshaft turns 180 deg and rests on its symmetric position, the sum of the values of both crank spreads is constant. Thus, a method called SYMMETRIC CONFIRMATION is proposed to check and verify the accuracy of crank spread measurement. With this method, not only accidents resulting from mismeasurement are liable to be avoided, but resonable installation and reliable maintenance of the crankshaft can be achieved. The regular patterns of the changes in crank spread are given on a mathematical basis, which have proved to be in accordance with the results of actual measurements in a number of tests. An analysis is also made of the various factors impairing accurate measurement together with their remedies.
